Tabasaran Language – 305
Tabasaran is a Northeast Caucasian language spoken primarily in the Tabasaran District of Dagestan, Russia. It is one of the many indigenous languages of the region, noted for its complex grammatical structure, particularly its extensive case system, which includes over 40 noun cases. The language is part of the Lezgic branch of the Northeast Caucasian language family.
The Tabasaran language uses the Cyrillic script for writing, a change implemented during the Soviet era to replace the earlier Arabic script. Despite the pressures of Russian, which is widely spoken and used in official contexts, Tabasaran remains an important aspect of cultural identity for its speakers. Efforts are ongoing to preserve and promote the language through educational programmes and local media, ensuring that it continues to be used in both daily life and cultural practices.
