Nogai Language – 309
The Nogai language is a Turkic language spoken by the Nogai people, primarily in the North Caucasus region of Russia, particularly in Dagestan, Stavropol Krai, and Chechnya. It belongs to the Kipchak branch of the Turkic language family and shares similarities with other Kipchak languages such as Kazakh and Karakalpak. Nogai has retained many archaic features, making it an important subject of study for linguists interested in the history and development of Turkic languages.
Nogai is written using the Cyrillic alphabet, although it historically used the Arabic script and, for a brief period, the Latin alphabet. The language is endangered, with many speakers shifting to Russian due to socio-political pressures and the dominance of Russian in education and public life. Efforts to revitalise Nogai include language preservation programs, educational initiatives, and the promotion of Nogai culture and literature to ensure the language’s survival for future generations.
