Lak Language – 304
Lak is a Northeast Caucasian language spoken by the Lak people primarily in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. It is one of the many languages in this linguistically diverse region, with a significant number of speakers concentrated in the Laksky District. The Lak language is characterised by a rich consonantal system and an extensive use of noun cases, which are typical features of Northeast Caucasian languages.
Lak has been written using various scripts over time. Historically, it utilised the Arabic script, but during the Soviet era, it was first converted to a Latin-based script and then to a Cyrillic script, which is still in use today. Despite the dominance of Russian, Lak remains a vibrant part of the cultural identity of its speakers, supported by efforts in education and media to maintain and promote the language.
