Kurdish Sorani, an Indo-European language, is predominantly spoken in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and parts of Iran, where it holds official language status. It is a member of the Northwestern Iranian branch of the Kurdish languages, distinct from the Kurmanji dialect spoken in other parts of the Kurdish-speaking world. In addition to Iraq and Iran, Kurdish Sorani is also spoken by Kurdish communities in Syria and Turkey, reflecting the dispersion of the Kurdish population across the Middle East. Despite facing historical challenges and political complexities, Kurdish Sorani plays a crucial role in preserving the cultural heritage and identity of the Kurdish people. Efforts to promote and standardise the language have been significant, with educational initiatives and cultural institutions contributing to its continued vitality in the diverse linguistic landscape of the region.
