Norwegian Bokmål is one of the two official written forms of the Norwegian language, alongside Nynorsk. It is the more widely used of the two and is based on a more conservative linguistic tradition. Bokmål, which translates to “book language,” originated from the written Danish used in Norway during the union with Denmark that lasted until 1814. After the dissolution of the union, efforts were made to develop a distinct Norwegian written form, leading to the creation of Bokmål.

Bokmål is used in various formal and official contexts, including education, government, and media. It is the predominant form of Norwegian in urban areas and has more speakers than Nynorsk.
