Oromo (R) Language - 034

The Oromo language is an Afro-Asiatic language belonging to the Cushitic branch. It is the most widely spoken Cushitic language and serves as the mother tongue of the Oromo people, the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. Additionally, Oromo communities can be found in Kenya, Somalia, and other neighbouring countries. The Oromo language plays a crucial role in expressing the identity, culture, and history of the Oromo people.
The language is characterised by its unique phonological and grammatical features. It employs a Latin-based script, and there are efforts to standardise the writing system. Historically, the Oromo people had an oral tradition, and their cultural and historical knowledge was transmitted through storytelling, proverbs, and songs. However, contemporary efforts are focused on developing and expanding written resources in the Oromo language.
Oromo has gained recognition and visibility in Ethiopia, especially with the political changes that have taken place in recent years. There is a growing awareness of the importance of linguistic diversity and the need to preserve and promote the Oromo language within the broader context of Ethiopia’s cultural landscape.
