Sicilian Language - 016
Sicilian is a Romance language spoken on the island of Sicily and its surrounding areas. It is considered a distinct language, although it shares many similarities with Italian and other Romance languages. Sicily has been influenced by various historical and cultural factors, including Greek, Arabic, Norman, and Spanish influences, due to the island’s complex history.
The language has several dialects, reflecting the diverse communities within Sicily. Over the centuries, Sicilian has been used in various literary and artistic forms, including poetry and theatre. However, its use has declined in formal and official settings in favour of Italian.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in preserving and revitalising Sicilian culture as part of the island’s cultural heritage. Efforts are being made to promote Sicilian culture in education and cultural initiatives, recognising its role in the identity of the Sicilian people. Despite these efforts, the dominance of Italian in national institutions and media presents challenges to the widespread use of Sicilian in contemporary society.
